HERFI is a not for profit charitable healthcare organization registered in India. It has been providing support and financial aid to patients with cardiac diseases and low vision for over two decades.
It was founded in 1995 by eminent Indian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon, Dr Bisheshwar Prasad MD MS FRCS (Edin). Dr. Prasad was the pioneer and eminent Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgeon of Bihar who accomplished the highest pinnacles of success achievable for an Indian surgeon abroad in his time. He was Former Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Patna Medical College Hospital. A product of PMCH, MBBS (1956) and MS (1959), he went on to clear prestigious FRCS(Ed) in 1st attempt in 1964. He was selected as the first Commonwealth Fellow from Bihar and trained at the Mecca of Cardio-Thoracic surgery at Royal Brompton Hospital, London where he specialized with honours. Deeply attached to his roots, he returned to serve the patients of Bihar and joined PMCH as the Head of CT Surgery at the age of 35 in 1965 where he remained the Head for nearly 30 years till retirement in 1991. He performed countless life saving surgeries and trained numerous surgeons to accomplish a lot in spite of dire lack of government finances and resources. He founded a charity with colleagues abroad which helped sponsor pacemakers for poor patients in Bihar. He was subsequently the first doctor from Bihar and one of first in India to be selected for the most prestigious fellowship with the inventor of the heart valve, Dr. Albert Starr at Oregon Health Sciences University, USA in 1974. He was a personal favourite of Dr. Starr and subsequently formed a lifelong alliance with him. Dr. Prasad worked in Oregon, USA for several years after getting his practice license and held the lifelong post of Visiting Professor at Oregon Health Sciences University, USA. Dr. Prasad practised in Patna along with stalwarts of cardiology like Dr. Vishnu Jain and founded Heart-Lung Institute & Panini Hospital where many charity cases were performed for over 20 years. He also founded the charity Healthcare Educational Research Foundation International (HERFI) and was President of Chest Forum of Bihar. He was a true larger than life hero who gave life and love to all he could. He will always be remembered for his immense dedication to his profession and patient and as a committed and very caring doctor.
